To create a compelling story, one needs to be present and to be open to inspiration. “ Not too tight, not too loose,” as my mentor, Barbara Dilley, used to say. To me, this simple quote is a reflection of how I like to create and how I like to direct. Sure, I will have strong ideas and an overall vision, but to me, the real magic happens in the room. I love to see how the actors, playwrights, and designers compose to make something their own. I love when I say, “What about this,” and they say, “Yes, and what about this, and this, and this!” The “yes, and” allows space for inspiration and simultaneously develops a cohesiveness and a confidence amongst collaborators.
